BELGRADE, Serbia (CNN) — Former Bosnian leader Radovan Karadzic will fight extradition from Serbia on war crime charges, his lawyer said Tuesday.karadzicnew

Lawyer Sveta Vujacic also disputed Serbian accounts of Karadzic’s arrest alleging the man known as the ‘Butcher of Bosnia’ was seized Friday and held in secret for three days.

Karadzic, 63, is accused of ordering the deadly siege of Sarajevo and some of the worst atrocities in Europe since World War II including the 1995 massacre of 8,000 Muslims in Srebrenica

Vujacic said Serbian authorities were not telling the truth about Karadzic’s arrest.

“Nobody seems to know who arrested him and where he has been since last Friday at 21:30 hours, when he was arrested,” he said.

“He just said that these people showed him a police badge and then he was taken to some place and kept in the room. He was blindfolded … he was kept in some room … and that is absolutely against the law what they did.”

Vujacic said he will launch criminal proceedings in addition to an appeal against Karadzic’s transfer to the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) at The Hague.

STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) — Asafa Powell took on the world’s fastest man with every intention of beating him to the finish line.

Usain Bolt just couldn’t catch up in time.

Powell capitalized on Bolt’s weak start and edged the world-record holder by one-hundredth of a second, leading from start to finish in the 100 meters at the DN Galan meet on Tuesday.powell

Powell, the former world-record holder, won their highly anticipated rematch in 9.88 seconds. Bolt, who was slow out of the blocks, nearly caught his fellow Jamaican at the finish line. Third went to Norwegian Jaysuma Saidy Ndure in 10.06.

“I was really happy with the race,” Powell said. “My goal was to win. My start was quick and fast. And the speed stayed with me through the finish.

“I’m really looking forward to the Olympics.”

The win was a measure of revenge for Powell, after losing to his close friend Bolt at Jamaica’s Olympic Trials last month.

Bolt set the world record of 9.72 in New York on May 31, breaking Powell’s mark of 9.74.

It was Powell’s third straight win at Olympic Stadium. Last year, he won in 10.04. In 2006, he set the stadium record of 9.86.

“I needed today’s win for my confidence,” Powell said. “That is most important in order to get really good times.”

Bolt was somber.

“I’m disappointed,” he said. “My start was not good enough. That was the key tonight. I was also disturbed by the false start. I could not focus at 100 percent.”

NEW YORK (AP) – The old song had it right: Breaking up is hard to do. But a free new phone service called Slydial might make it easier to get through that and other awkward moments — without actually having to talk to anyone.cellphone.gi

Slydial lets you connect directly with another person’s cell phone voice mail, bypassing the traditional ringing process that often results, sometimes disastrously, with someone picking up on the other end.

Users call (267) SLY-DIAL from either a cell phone or a landline and are prompted to enter another person’s cell phone number.

After playing a short advertisement — unless users pay a subscription fee or 15 cents per call to skip ads — Slydial puts callers directly into their target’s voice mail.

Recipients should then get a voice mail notification, and sometimes they will see a caller’s number show up as a missed call, too.

Gavin Macomber, co-founder of MobileSphere Ltd., the Boston-based communications company behind Slydial, thinks it can be useful not only in the dating scene but in the hectic business world.

“Everybody has gone through the scenario where they’ve called somebody and just hoped they got voice mail so they didn’t have to have a conversation,” he said.

GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba (CNN) – Osama bin Laden’s former driver knew the target of one of the hijacked planes on September 11, 2001, prosecutors said as the military commission trial of Salim Hamdan began Tuesday.hamdan.sketch

Hamdan told U.S. interrogators the fourth plane was aimed at “the dome,” apparently a reference to the U.S. Capitol, the prosecutors said. The plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after the passengers fought the hijackers.

But the defense said Hamdan was a low-level driver who knew little about the workings of bin Laden’s al Qaeda network. They said he worked for wages, not to wage attacks against America.

Captured at a roadblock in Afghanistan in November 2001, Hamdan pleaded not guilty at the start of the trial, which will be closely watched as the first full test of the Pentagon’s system for prosecuting alleged terrorists.

He faces a maximum life sentence if convicted of conspiracy and aiding terrorism.

The first prosecution witness, a U.S. soldier who was present when Hamdan was captured, originally said Hamdan was driving a car that had SA-7 surface-to-air missiles intended for al Qaeda. But on cross-examination, the soldier, identified only as Maj. Smith, said he could not be sure Hamdan was the driver of one of the three vehicles carrying the missiles.

LONDON - The oldest surviving copy of the New Testament, a 4th century version that had its Gospels and epistles spread across the world, is being made whole again — online.bible

The British Library says the full text of the Codex Sinaiticus will be available to Web users by next July, digitally reconnecting parts that are held in Britain, Russia, Germany and a monastery in Egypt’s Sinai Desert.

A preview of the Codex, which also has some parts of the Old Testament, will hit the Web on Thursday — the Book of Psalms and the Gospel of Mark.

“Only a few people have ever had the opportunity to see more than a couple of pages of the (Codex),” said Scot McKendrick, the British Library’s head of Western manuscripts. The Web site will give everyone access to a “unique treasure,” he said.

Discovered at the Monastery of Saint Catherine at Mount Sinai by German Bible scholar Constantine Tischendorf in the mid-19th century, much of the Codex eventually wound up in Russia — just how exactly the British Library won’t say, citing lingering sensitivity over the circumstances surrounding its removal from the monastery.

SAN FRANCISCO - Yahoo Inc.’s profit slipped again in the second quarter, a recurring theme that has frustrated shareholders and raised doubts about the Internet company’s future.yahoo

While the results released Tuesday missed analyst expectations, the performance wasn’t as bad as many investors feared after Internet search and advertising leader Google Inc. disappointed Wall Street with its second-quarter earnings last week.

What’s more, Yahoo management maintained its revenue outlook for the remainder of 2008. The confident stance eased concerns about Yahoo’s financial erosion worsening amid the dreary economy in the United States and parts of Europe.

Yahoo shares rebounded 58 cents in extended trading after falling 27 cents to finish Tuesday’s regular session at $21.40.

“They did better than the worst expectations,” said Canaccord Adams analyst Colin Gillis. “It was a ‘rice-cracker’ quarter. It didn’t taste great, but it wasn’t totally horrible either.”

The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company earned $131 million, or 9 cents per share, from April through June. That was down 18 percent from $161 million, or 11 cents per share, at the same time last year.
