Presa americana, reprodusa de cea europeana, readuce pe tapet povestea divortului liderului de la Casa Alba, care ar trebui sa devina oficial in luna ianuarie a anului viitor, cand Bush va parasi Biroul Oval.

Pentru comentatorii politici de peste Ocean, stirea privind separarea cuplului Bush, “reincalzita” sau nu, reprezinta o arma politica eficienta impotriva republicanilor, cu doar cateva luni inainte de alegerile prezidentiale din Statele Unite. Pe de alta parte, presa araba speculeaza ca relatiile incordate dintre cei doi soti ar putea provoca si o reactie nervoasa a presedintelui SUA intr-un moment delicat al relatiilor americano-iraniene. (CNN) — One of five British hostages captured in Iraq last year has committed suicide, the kidnappers said in a videotape obtained by The Sunday Times.

The London-based newspaper published a video that included a statement claiming that the hostage, identified as Jason, died May 25, four days before the first anniversary of his abduction.

The video was received in Baghdad last week, the newspaper said.

The British government said it could not independently verify the claims in the video, including the hostage’s “purported death,” a Foreign Office spokeswoman said.

“As in the case of previous messages from the hostage takers, the Government emphasizes the humanitarian appeal of the families for the men’s release,” a statement from the Foreign Office said.

The video is titled “Intihar” — or “suicide” — and opens with a photograph of the hostage wearing a football shirt, the newspaper reported.

He is identified as Jason in a statement signed “The Shiite Islamic Resistance in Iraq” that appears on screen.

The statement, according to the newspaper, blames the British government for the status of the hostages.

“This procrastination and foot-dragging and lack of seriousness on the part of the British government has prolonged their psychological deterioration, pushing one of them, Jason, to commit suicide on 25/5/2008,” the statement said, according to the newspaper. “He surprised our brethren, who were taking care of him, with his suicide.”

BEIJING, China (AP) — Beijing started its drastic traffic control plan Sunday in a last-minute push to clear the capital’s pollution-choked skies in time for the August Olympics.

Under the two-month plan, half of Beijing’s 3.3 million cars will be removed from city streets on alternate days, depending on whether the license plate ends in an odd or even number.

Skies were relatively clear Sunday and traffic was light. But the real test will come when the work week begins.

To further ease vehicle emissions, one of the city’s chief sources of pollution, employers have been asked to stagger work schedules and public institutions will open an hour later than normal.

Two new subway lines and an airport rail link should also bring relief. All three lines opened Saturday — a month behind schedule.

In addition to the traffic plan, chemical plants, power stations and foundries have to cut emissions by 30 percent beginning Sunday. Dust-spewing construction in the capital was to stop entirely.

It is unclear how the effectiveness of the plan will be gauged. The government has not made public a specific target for emissions levels or said how it will measure air quality.

WASHINGTON - The tomato scare may be over, but it has taken a toll — it’s cost the industry an estimated $100 million and left millions of people with a new wariness about the safety of everyday foods.

An Associated Press-Ipsos poll finds that nearly half of consumers have changed their eating and buying habits in the past six months because they’re afraid they could get sick by eating contaminated food.

They also overwhelmingly support setting up a better system to trace produce in an outbreak back to the source, the poll found.

The people who feel that way include the growers.

Virginia’s East Coast Brokers, one of the largest tomato growers in the country, has been hammered by slumping demand and falling prices, although Virginia tomatoes were cleared early on, said sales manager Batista Madonia III. He said he’s frustrated by the government’s inability to find the root cause of the outbreak despite a nearly two-month long investigation.

The salmonella outbreak has sickened more than 1,200 people in 42 states since the first cases were seen in April.

“I guarantee in that time frame, more than 1,000 people were injured slipping on a banana peel,” said Madonia.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — Brenda Walsh is all grown-up and returning to Beverly Hills, 90210, this fall. But cast members of the new CW spin-off, “90210,” are speculating whether Shannen Doherty will be equally mature when she reprises her role as Walsh.

“I have heard some of the stories,” “90210″ star AnnaLynne McCord said of the sometimes-volatile relationship between Doherty and co-star Jennie Garth on the original series, which aired from 1990-2000.

Garth is returning to her role as Kelly Taylor, now a school guidance counselor, on “90210.”

In the new series, Doherty’s Walsh is now a famous theater director invited back to West Beverly Hills High School to stage a musical, CW announced Saturday at a Television Critics Association meeting in, of course, Beverly Hills.

Her guest role plays out over multiple episodes, the network said.

“If she and Jennie have it out while I’m there, OK, then, all right, so that’s the story,” McCord said of any possible discord during production.

“We’re co-workers, we’re going to be co-stars and I want to treat her (Doherty) with the respect that I would treat any other co-star,” said McCord, who played the evil Eden on FX’s “Nip/Tuck.”

KABUL, Afghanistan - Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama shared Sunday breakfast with American troops in Kabul ahead of an expected meeting with Afghan leader Hamid Karzai, a man Obama has criticized for not doing enough to rebuild his war-torn country.

Obama and the other senators traveling with him met with soldiers and sailors from their respective constituencies, said Lt. Col. Dave Johnson, a U.S. military spokesman.

“The food was great, but the company was better,” Johnson said.

Obama has made Afghanistan, where Taliban and al-Qaida-linked militants are resurgent, a centerpiece of his proposed strategy for dealing with terror threats. The candidate has said the war in Afghanistan deserves more troops and more attention as opposed to the conflict in Iraq.

While officially a part of a congressional delegation on a fact-finding tour also expected to take him to Iraq, Obama was traveling in Afghanistan amid the publicity and scrutiny accorded a likely Democratic nominee for president rather than a senator from Illinois. Security was tight and media access to Obama was limited by his campaign.

Traveling with Obama were Sens. Chuck Hagel, a Nebraska Republican, and Jack Reed, a Democrat from Rhode Island. Both are military veterans and have been mentioned as potential Obama vice presidential running mates, although Reed has said he is not interested in the job and Hagel would be an unlikely cross-party choice.
