(CNN) — Russia has reacted angrily to comments made by U.S. and British officials who criticized Moscow’s veto of U.N. sanctions against Zimbabwe.
Officials in the United States and Britain were quick to exclaim their surprise over Friday’s veto by Russia and China on sanctions.
The U.S.-led sanctions were aimed at punishing Zimbabwean leader Robert Mugabe’s deadly crackdown on the opposition Move for Democratic Change during and after the presidential election.
The Russian Foreign Ministry in a statement Saturday said the criticism “places a question mark over the worthiness of Russia as a G-8 partner,” The Associated Press reported.
It added that the possibility of U.N. sanctions on Zimbabwe was excluded at a recent G-8 summit in Japan.
Russia said it believed the sanctions would set a precedent for U.N. meddling, AP reported.
The sanctions would have been imposed on Mugabe and 11 senior members of his government.
According to a draft of the resolution, the measure would have instituted a travel ban, frozen many of their assets and imposed an international arms embargo on the regime.

(CNN) — Bloggers can’t stop gossiping. Readers can’t stop guessing. Now, after months of waiting, three big names will finally address the rumors.
No, not Madonna, A-Rod, or Lenny Kravitz, but another big-name trio with just as much swirling drama: Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony.
The big three players of the nearly $37.5 billion video-gaming industry will reveal their newest, biggest and most secretive products in Los Angeles next week at the E3 Media and Business Summit, putting a temporary end to the industry’s massive game of cat and mouse with consumers.
Each year at E3, game developers and publishers come together to unleash what they hope will become the next big thing.
E3 2007 gave birth to such hits as “Wii Fit,” “Mario Kart,” “Grand Theft Auto IV,” “Call of Duty 4,” the Slim Sony PSP and “Rock Band.”
In the weeks and months before the conference, serious gamers swarm message boards, blogs and popular gaming Web sites, hoping to outguess each other about what secrets the big names might be withholding.

NICE, France (AP) — Brad Pitt was emotional but calm, Angelina Jolie laughed and chatted.
The world’s most famous celebrity couple were joined in emotion during the birth of their twins — a boy and a girl — and all “are doing marvelously well,” the doctor who delivered the babies in a seaside hospital on the French Riviera said Sunday.
The newborns — Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline, born one minute apart Saturday evening — are the ultimate million-dollar babies, with experts estimating their first photos will fetch a fortune.
“In the celebrity world, it seems to be the double second coming,” said Darryn Lyons, owner of Big Pictures, a photo agency in London.
For now, mother, father and newborns are resting out of the public eye on the fifth floor of the Lenval hospital, behind blue mirrored windows that provide sweeping views of Nice’s sun-drenched beaches, but that are specially treated to deflect the prying lenses of paparazzi.
Jolie’s obstetrician, Dr. Michel Sussmann, said the 44-year-old Pitt was at Jolie’s side during the delivery, looking on as the doctor performed a Caesarean section to deliver Knox, weighing in at 2.28 kilograms (5.03 pounds) and Vivienne, who weighed 2.27 kilogram (5 pounds).
“He was my assistant,” Sussmann joked.

RAWALPINDI, Pakistan - In early June, about 300 fighters from jihadist groups came together for a secret gathering here, in the same city that serves as headquarters to the Pakistani army.
The groups were launched long ago with the army’s clandestine support to fight against India in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir. But at the meeting, they agreed to resolve their differences and commit more fighters to another front instead: Afghanistan.
“The message was that the jihad in Kashmir is still continuing but it is not the most important right now. Afghanistan is the fighting ground, against the Americans there,” said Toor Gul, a leader of the militant group Hezb-ul Mujahedeen. The groups included the al-Qaida-linked Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Tayyaba, banned by Pakistan and branded terrorists by the U.S., he said.
The U.S. military says militant attacks in eastern Afghanistan have increased 40 percent this year over 2007. And for two straight months, the death toll of foreign troops in Afghanistan has exceeded that of Iraq. On Sunday, nine U.S. soldiers were killed in an ambush in Afghanistan’s eastern Kunar province, the deadliest single attack for the U.S. since June 2005.
