Of the Axis-of-Evil nations named in his State of the Union in 2002, President Bush has often said, “The United States will not permit the world’s most dangerous regimes to threaten us with the world’s most destructive weapons.”
He failed with North Korea. Will he accept failure in Iran, though there is no hard evidence Iran has an active nuclear weapons program?
William Kristol of the Weekly Standard said June 22 that a U.S. attack on Iran after the election is more likely should Barack Obama win. Presumably, Bush would trust John McCain to keep Iran nuclear free.
To start a third war in the Middle East against a nation three times as large as Iraq, and leave it to a new president to fight, would be a daylight hijacking of the congressional war power and a criminally irresponsible act. For Congress alone has the power to authorize war.
Yet Israel is even today pushing Bush into a pre-emptive war with a naked threat to attack Iran itself should Bush refuse the cup.
In April, Israel held a five-day civil defense drill. In June, Israel sent 100 F-15s and F-16s, with refueling tankers and helicopters to pick up downed pilots, toward Greece in a simulated attack, a dress rehearsal for war. The planes flew 1,400 kilometers, the distance to Iran’s uranium enrichment facility at Natanz.

(CNN) — Train wrecks are intrinsically spectacular, and Will Smith’s new movie offers a doozy. Two of them, in fact.
In the first, Jason Bateman’s genial public relations guy Ray is sitting in his car, snarled in traffic and oblivious to the locomotive bearing down on him until it’s almost too late.
Fortunately for Ray, John Hancock (Smith) is on the case. Using his Superman-like powers, Hancock flips Ray’s car up and over in a neat backward somersault, safely out of harm’s way. At the same time he thrusts out his arm and stops the train in its tracks. While Ray is grateful, the guy in the car underneath his isn’t so sure — and the damage to the derailed train stretches back a half-mile or more.
That’s the train wreck within the movie. The train wreck that is the movie is even more interesting.
We all know that Will Smith “owns” the July 4 weekend — so much so, there aren’t any other big openings this week (aside from the small-scale “Kit Kittredge: An American Girl,” which began in limited release last week). Since “Independence Day” he’s virtually become synonymous with Big Summer Fun. And he makes it look so easy, too.

MADRID, Spain (CNN) — Saudi Arabia on Tuesday ruled out further increases in crude production following its June 23 announcement that it would pump an extra half-million barrels a day.
In an interview with CNN, Saudi Oil Minister Ali al-Naimi said he was troubled by the current high levels of petroleum prices, but added, “We have nothing to do with prices where they are today.”
He denied the problem is one of immediate oil supply.
Asked whether Saudi Arabia, OPEC’s leading producer, would open its taps to its reported maximum capacity of 11 million barrels a day, al-Naimi did not dispute the figure but asked rhetorically, “Where is the buyer?”
Al-Naimi was speaking to CNN on the sidelines of the four-day World Petroleum Congress in Madrid, Spain, where leaders of the oil industry from around the world are meeting. They include government ministers, national oil company leaders, and international oil company bosses.
Al-Naimi ruled out an option advanced by some oil-watchers: to make more Saudi Arabia heavy crude available, but at a discount in order to bring prices down.

ULAANBAATAR, Mongolia (AP) — Mongolia’s president declared a four-day state of emergency in the capital early Wednesday after angry protesters clashed with police and stormed the headquarters of the ruling political party alleging fraud in last weekend’s parliamentary election.
President Nambaryn Enkhbayar’s decree allows police to use force in dealing with thousands of rock-throwing protesters who mobbed the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party headquarters Tuesday and set it on fire. The crowd had not dispersed by Tuesday night, despite repeated volleys of tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannons.
“Police will use necessary force to crack down on criminals who are looting private and government property,” said Munkhorgil, the minister of justice and home affairs, who like some Mongolians goes by one name. Ulaanbaatar was also placed under a 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. curfew, he said.
The crowd thinned slightly after the emergency declaration in the early hours of Wednesday, though some protesters had begun looting paintings from an art gallery and televisions from government offices. Others vandalized cars parked on downtown streets.
Enkhbayar, a ruling party member, acknowledged the protesters’ complaints over results of the election but appealed for calm.
“Let’s sit down and solve the election fraud,” he said on national TV.

NEW YORK - In 2002, at a Johns Hopkins University laboratory, a business consultant named Dede Osborn took a psychedelic drug as part of a research project.
She felt like she was taking off. She saw colors. Then it felt like her heart was ripping open.
But she called the experience joyful as well as painful, and says that it has helped her to this day.
“I feel more centered in who I am and what I’m doing,” said Osborn, now 66, of Providence, R.I. “I don’t seem to have those self-doubts like I used to have. I feel much more grounded (and feel that) we are all connected.”
Scientists reported Tuesday that when they surveyed volunteers 14 months after they took the drug, most said they were still feeling and behaving better because of the experience.
Two-thirds of them also said the drug had produced one of the five most spiritually significant experiences they’d ever had.
