(CNN) – Calling Zimbabwe’s runoff presidential election a “sham,” U.S. President George W. Bush said Saturday that he would push for additional sanctions against the country’s government.
“I am instructing the secretaries of State and Treasury to develop sanctions against this illegitimate government of Zimbabwe and those who support it,” Bush said in a statement.
Zimbabwe held a runoff Friday after presidential elections March 29 including opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai and longtime President Robert Mugabe failed to yield a clear winner.
The runoff vote was condemned internationally and Mugabe’s Zanu-PF party accused of using intimidation and violence to force people, particularly in rural areas, to vote for him.
“We will press for strong action by the United Nations, including an arms embargo on Zimbabwe and travel ban on regime officials,” Bush said.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) – South Korean protesters battled riot police early Sunday at a rally opposing the resumption of American beef imports, hours after the U.S. secretary of state vouched for the health of U.S. cattle.
About 15,000 people — some wielding steel pipes and hurling stones at police — staged a street demonstration in Seoul on Saturday night, demanding the government withdraw its decision to lift a ban on U.S. beef imports.
The rally turned violent after some protesters used ropes to try to drag away police buses used as barricades to prevent them from marching into the presidential Blue House.
Riot police immediately fired water cannons and sprayed fire extinguishers to repel them.
Angry protesters attacked police with steel pipes and stones, while police used clubs and shields against the crowd. The clash left several hundred protesters and riot police injured, according to local media reports.

MEYRIN, Switzerland - The most powerful atom-smasher ever built could make some bizarre discoveries, such as invisible matter or extra dimensions in space, after it is switched on in August.
But some critics fear the Large Hadron Collider could exceed physicists’ wildest conjectures: Will it spawn a black hole that could swallow Earth? Or spit out particles that could turn the planet into a hot dead clump?
Ridiculous, say scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, known by its French initials CERN — some of whom have been working for a generation on the $5.8 billion collider, or LHC.
“Obviously, the world will not end when the LHC switches on,” said project leader Lyn Evans.
David Francis, a physicist on the collider’s huge ATLAS particle detector, smiled when asked whether he worried about black holes and hypothetical killer particles known as strangelets.
“If I thought that this was going to happen, I would be well away from here,” he said.

WASHINGTON - Presidential rivals John McCain and Barack Obama on Saturday vied for the support of Hispanics, beginning a four-month courtship of a pivotal voting constituency by vowing to revamp immigration policy.
“I come from a border state, my dear friends. I know these issues,” McCain told Hispanic elected officials. The Republican senator from Arizona said overhauling the country’s broken immigration system, not just securing its borders, “will be my top priority.”
Appearing later before the same audience, Obama accused McCain of walking away from comprehensive immigration reform. The Democratic senator from Illinois said: “We must assert our values and reconcile our principles as a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws. That is a priority I will pursue from my very first day.”

NEW YORK - NBC is making more than 2,200 hours of live competition from Beijing available online, giving Olympic junkies more action than they could ever devour in a day.
After barely tipping its toe in the digital world during past Olympics, the network will dive into the deep end: live blogging, 3,000 hours of highlights on demand, daily recaps and analysis and even fantasy league gaming. That’s in addition to the 1,400 hours of coverage planned on six television networks, more than the combined total of every previous Summer Olympics.
NBC’s digital plans, however, have angered media outlets that worry the company is being heavy-handed in enforcing its rights to exclusive Olympic access.
The network launched NBCOlympics.com in 2000, but then it offered only still pictures and schedule information to drive viewers to its television coverage. A limited package of highlights from Athens was available in 2004, but those visiting the NBC site were required to enter a credit card number, even though they weren’t charged, and that drove away traffic.

KHYBER AGENCY, Pakistan - Pakistan’s newly elected government launched the first major assault against militants in the country’s volatile northwest on Saturday, destroying a militant leader’s headquarters and shelling suspected hideouts of other fighters.
The offensive in the Khyber tribal region appeared to mark a refinement in strategy by the new government, backing its calls for peace deals in the tribal areas along the Afghan border with the threat of forceful action against militants who get out of line.
The United States said such deals were giving militants the freedom to regroup for attacks on U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan. With growing militant threats to the nearby Pakistani city of Peshawar — and to the key Khyber supply route for U.S. forces in
Afghanistan — Pakistan took action.
Late Friday, 700 troops from the paramilitary Frontier Corps moved into Kyber in preparation for the offensive, a round-the-clock curfew was imposed in the Bara area, and heavy contingents of troops blocked the main road from Peshawar into Kyber, local officials said.
