Descoperirea îi va ajuta pe cercetători să înţeleagă evoluţia peştilor în animalele superioare care au cutreierat uscatul.

Fosila unei creaturi acvatice botezate Ventastega curonica, cu corp de peşte şi cap de animal de uscat, a fost scoasă la suprafaţă de către cercetătorii suedezi, în cadrul unor săpături realizate în Letonia. Cu toate că Ventastega a reprezentat cel mai probabil un capăt de drum la nivel evolutiv, descoperirea aruncă lumină asupra mecanismului prin care creaturile primitive au făcut tranziţia de la apă la uscat.

După cum notează BBC Online, cercetătorii au găsit doar un fragment de pelvis, craniul şi umerii animalului, însă şi-au putut da seama după structura acestora că Ventastega a avut ataşate patru membre în loc de obişnuitele înotătoare.

U.S. President George Bush says he is ready to lift some sanctions against North Korea and drop it from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism, after Pyongyang submitted a long-awaited declaration on its nuclear activities. VOA’s Paula Wolfson reports from the White House. 

President Bush says multilateral negotiations with North Korea on the nuclear issue have always been based on the premise of action for action.

He says, now that Pyongyang has submitted its nuclear declaration, the United States is living up to its end of the bargain.

“I am issuing a proclamation that lifts the provisions of the Trading With the Enemy Act with respect to North Korea,” the president said. “And secondly, I am notifying Congress of my intent to rescind North Korea’s designation as a state sponsor of terror in 45 days.”

GAZA CITY: Israel kept commercial crossings into the Gaza Strip closed on Friday after a Palestinian rocket attack the day before tested a week-old truce and was slammed by the territory’s Hamas rulers. Two mortar rounds were also fired at Israel from the Gaza Strip on Friday, a military spokesman said, though he could not confirm where they hit. Army Radio said they landed in open fields near the border without hurting anyone.

On Thursday Palestinian militants fired two rockets, one of which struck a field near the hard-hit southern Israeli town of Sderot without causing either casualties or damage.

That attack was claimed by the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, a group tied to the Fatah party of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas whose forces were driven from Gaza when Hamas seized control there over a year ago.

WASHINGTON - The Taliban has created a “resilient insurgency” in Afghanistan and will likely maintain or increase the pace of its attacks this year, the Pentagon said on Friday.

In a report to the U.S. Congress, the Pentagon also singled out the safe havens for insurgents in Pakistan’s border areas as the biggest threat to security in Afghanistan.

It said Washington and its allies had made substantial progress since ousting the Taliban from power after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the United States but lasting success would take time and require much more than just military means.

“The Taliban regrouped after its fall from power and have coalesced into a resilient insurgency,” the report said.
