BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) — A top militant who once served as a general in the military under Saddam Hussein was arrested on Monday, Iraqi officials said.
Abdul Khaleq al-Sabawi, al Qaeda in Iraq’s leader in the Nineveh province city of Mosul, was arrested in Tikrit, according to Iraq’s Interior Ministry.
The arrest is considered part of the Mother of Two Springs offensive against al Qaeda in Iraq in Mosul because Nineveh officers carried out the raid.
Interior Ministry spokesman, Maj. Gen. Abdul Karim Khalaf said al-Sabawi is now being interrogated. Khalaf didn’t elaborate on the operation, but said no shots were fired during the arrest.
The Mother of Two Springs operation focuses on militants in the Mosul area. Iraqi government officials call Mosul the last big urban stronghold for al Qaeda in Iraq.
The operation has netted 1,330 detainees since the start of last week’s crackdown, with 240 of them being released, Khalaf said.

BOSTON (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) has proposed to buy Yahoo Inc’s (YHOO.O) search business and take a minority stake in the Web pioneer, stopping short of a full-out merger, a person familiar with the discussions said on Monday.
As part of the deal, Yahoo would sell its Asian assets including significant minority stakes in Yahoo Japan (4689.T) and China’s Alibaba Group, while Microsoft would buy a chunk of what remains of the company, the source said.
The talks were revealed by the two companies on Sunday, but they declined to reveal the terms of the discussions. Earlier this month, Microsoft walked away from a proposal to acquire Yahoo for $47.5 billion, or $33 per share, after Yahoo rebuffed the offer, saying it would only settle for $37 a share.

LE MANS, France (AP) – Valentino Rossi of Italy won the French Grand Prix on Sunday for his 90th triumph in all classes, tying Angel Nieto for second place on the all-time list behind Giacomo Agostini with 122 victories.
Starting the Moto GP race from the second row on the grid, Rossi exchanged daring passes with defending overall champion Casey Stoner on the sixth lap before taking the lead.
Rossi quickly escaped the pack, while Dani Pedrosa accelerated past Stoner on the 10th lap.
Australian rider Stoner retired on the 20th lap because of a mechanical problem.
Jorge Lorenzo staged an impressive comeback, despite two injured ankles and crashes on Friday and Saturday, to overtake Edwards on the 19th lap and Pedrosa on the next lap to finish second.
Colin Edwards of the United States finished third while Rossi leads the standings with 97 points after five rounds. Pedrosa and Lorenzo are next with 94.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) — A soldier used the Quran — Islam’s holy book — for target practice, forcing the chief U.S. commander in Baghdad to issue a formal apology on Saturday.
Maj. Gen. Jeffrey Hammond, commander of U.S. forces in Baghdad, flanked by leaders from Radhwaniya in the western outskirts of Baghdad, apologized for the staff sergeant who was a sniper section leader assigned to the headquarters of the 64th Armored Regiment. He also read a letter of apology by the shooter.
It was the first time the incident — which tested the relationship between U.S.-backed Sunni militiamen and the military — was made public since it was discovered May 11.
"I come before you here seeking your forgiveness," Hammond said to tribal leaders and others at the apology ceremony. "In the most humble manner I look in your eyes today and I say please forgive me and my soldiers."

SHARM EL-SHEIK, Egypt (AP) – At the start of his Mideast trip, President Bush gave Israel glowing praise. As it ended on Sunday, the president gave the Arab world a stern lecture: Isolate state sponsors of terror and give citizens more freedoms.
"Too often in the Middle East, politics has consisted of one leader in power and the opposition in jail," Bush said at the World Economic Forum on the Middle East. "The time has come for nations across the Middle East to abandon these practices, and treat their people with the dignity and respect they deserve."
Bush’s address to hundreds of global policymakers and business leaders gathered in this Red Sea beach town was his finishing touch on a five-day Mideast trip to Egypt, Israel and Saudi Arabia.
The speech, and Bush’s second Mideast trip of the year, came eight months before the end of his presidency, his target date for reaching a sweeping peace agreement that would resolve generations-old grievances and create a Palestinian state.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Scientists have created monkeys genetically modified to have Huntington’s disease in an effort to gain a deeper understanding of the fatal ailment and uncover clues to possible new treatments.
In the journal Nature on Sunday, the researchers said one of two surviving rhesus macaque monkeys engineered to have the defective gene that causes Huntington’s in humans already is showing tell-tale symptoms at age 10 months.
Huntington’s — incurable and hereditary — is caused by a single abnormal gene in which certain nerve cells in the brain waste away. People are born with the gene but symptoms typically do not appear until middle age.
Researchers often study laboratory animals such as mice to get insights into the underlying biology of diseases. But monkeys and other primates are more similar to people than rodents in physiological, neurological and genetic features.
The scientists at Emory University’s Yerkes National Primate Research Center in Atlanta said the monkeys are the first primates genetically modified to have a human disease.

WASHINGTON - Global warming isn’t to blame for the recent jump in hurricanes in the Atlantic, concludes a study by a prominent federal scientist whose position has shifted on the subject.
Not only that, warmer temperatures will actually reduce the number of hurricanes in the Atlantic and those making landfall, research meteorologist Tom Knutson reported in a study released Sunday.
In the past, Knutson has raised concerns about the effects of climate change on storms. His new paper has the potential to heat up a simmering debate among meteorologists about current and future effects of global warming in the Atlantic.
Ever since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, hurricanes have often been seen as a symbol of global warming’s wrath. Many climate change experts have tied the rise of hurricanes in recent years to global warming and hotter waters that fuel them.

SEATTLE/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp said on Sunday it proposed an alternative deal to Yahoo Inc rather than a full acquisition, but the move was unlikely to win favor with financier Carl Icahn, a person familiar with his thinking said.
Icahn launched a proxy campaign on Thursday to replace Yahoo’s board with directors who would reopen talks with Microsoft, saying Yahoo had acted irrationally in refusing the giant software company’s $47.5 billion bid.
Microsoft walked away from its pursuit of Yahoo two weeks ago after three months of negotiations when Yahoo’s board rejected Microsoft’s sweetened offer of $33 a share, saying the company was worth at least $37 a share.
The software giant’s move on Sunday was likely to prompt the billionaire investor to press Yahoo to further pursue a possible alliance with Google, the source said.
